Following the internal appointment of our Manager Communications and Engagement to a General Manager role, we're on the search for an experienced, dynamic and energetic Manager Communications and Engagement to lead our Communications and Engagement Team.

As the Manager Communications and Engagement, you will drive strategic communications, public relations, and community engagement for the Whakatāne District Council. Your leadership will ensure clear, transparent, and effective communication between Council, stakeholders, and the wider community.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement a communications and engagement strategy aligned with Council priorities.
- Lead media relations, public relations, and crisis communications.
- Drive digital, social media, and branding strategies to enhance Council's public presence.
- Build strong relationships with iwi, businesses, community groups, and key stakeholders.
- Oversee internal communications, ensuring clear messaging across Council.
- Lead and mentor a high-performing team, fostering innovation and collaboration.
- Ensure Council's reputation is protected and enhanced through effective engagement.

We're looking for a strategic communicator and relationship builder with a passion for engaging communities and driving impactful messaging.
What you will bring:
- Proven experience in a senior communications, public relations, or engagement role.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, with experience in media management.
- Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and effective engagement with Māori.
- Political acumen and experience working in a local government or public sector environment.
- Digital and social media expertise, with a strong understanding of brand management.
