We're on the hunt for a Principal Communications Advisor - this is a senior role with serious scope to help shape how we show up for our communities. As our Principal Communications Advisor, you'll be a trusted advisor to our leadership team, helping shape the narrative of a future-focused, community-driven Council. You'll lead communications on major projects, complex issues, and high-profile moments - from emergency responses to reputation management.
What you'll be doing:
- Driving bold, clear communication strategies that genuinely connect with our diverse audiences.
- Providing strategic advice to our Chief Executive, senior leaders, and, at times, our Mayor and elected members on all things communications, reputation, and risk.
- Leading the way on issues and crisis comms - ensuring clarity, consistency, and community confidence.
- Managing media relationships and creating compelling content that builds trust and tells the story of our district.
- Lifting the standard of our internal comms and digital channels to keep our teams aligned, connected and inspired.
Ko wai koe | About you
You're an experienced communications professional with at least seven years under your belt in senior advisory, public relations, or media roles.. You've worked in complex or political environments and are calm under pressure, sharp in your thinking, and confident advising senior leaders when the stakes are high. You're also a natural storyteller who can take complex information and shape it into clear, engaging messages. People trust your judgment, value your insights, and know you'll always keep people at the heart of your advice. You understand the power of communication to build trust and reputation, especially through change or crisis. You bring a strategic mindset, a proactive approach, and a genuine commitment to inclusive, community-focused communication. You also have a solid understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and are comfortable weaving te ao Māori perspectives into your work.
