Data Migration Specialist (fixed term)
- 1-year fixed term (November 2025 - October 2026)
- Play a key role in one of Council's most significant digital transformation projects.
- Collaborate with a supportive and experienced project team.
We're looking for a skilled and customer-focused Data Migration Specialist to join our ERP Implementation Programme. This role isn't just about moving data — it's about working closely with people across the organisation to make sure the transition is smooth, accurate, and well supported.
Ko wai mātau | About us
The people at Whakatāne District Council love what we do because we do it for others, and that feels good. We work hard and we know it's important to stop and play too. We're on a learning journey because we know we can always do better, and we know we're better together. Will you come on that journey with us? In return, you'll get access to a range of staff benefits including flexible working arrangements, an extra week's annual leave and free or discounted access to our community facilities. You'll never be more than half an hour away from rivers, lakes, forests, beaches and great walks - most are just on your doorstep. We love this place, and you will too.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role
As a Data Migration Specialist, you'll combine technical expertise with strong relationship skills to deliver one of the most critical elements of our ERP programme. You'll work directly with business teams, subject matter experts, and technical partners to understand their data, resolve issues, and ensure it's migrated accurately into the new system. Just as importantly, you'll translate complex data processes into clear, practical language, building trust and confidence with stakeholders throughout the journey. This role offers the chance to make a real impact — supporting our people, protecting data integrity, and helping to shape how we deliver services to our community into the future.
What you'll do
- Analyse legacy system data and coordinate data cleansing activities with business owners.
- Define and validate data mapping and transformation rules in collaboration with technical teams.
- Support test migration cycles, reconciliations, and data validation processes.
- Document processes and ensure compliance with information management, privacy, and audit requirements.
- Communicate clearly with stakeholders, translating technical detail into practical solutions that build confidence and trust.
Ko wai koe | About you
You'll be more than just technically capable — you'll be someone who enjoys engaging with people, building relationships, and making complex processes simple and accessible. You'll combine a sharp eye for detail with the ability to collaborate across different teams, bringing patience, clarity, and confidence to stakeholders as they navigate change. If you're someone who thrives on solving problems while supporting others through transition, this role will suit you well.
What you'll bring
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills, with the ability to engage confidently across the organisation as well as with external parties.
- A degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or 5+ years' equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in data analysis, cleansing, and migration (essential).
- Strong SQL and Excel skills for data extraction and validation.
- Experience in ERP implementation projects (desirable).
- Excellent communication and documentation skills, with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
- A commitment to accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement.
