Ko wai mātau | About us

The people at Whakatāne District Council love what we do because we do it for others, and that feels good. We work hard and we know it's important to stop and play too. We're on a learning journey because we know we can always do better, and we know we're better together. Will you come on that journey with us? You'll get access to a range of staff benefits including free swimming pool access. You'll never be more than half an hour away from rivers, lakes, forests, beaches, and great walks - most are just on your doorstep. We love this place, and you will too.

Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role

Join Whakatāne's Visitor Information Centre team and help us showcase the incredible stories, experiences and people that make our district special. In this customer‑facing role, you'll welcome visitors and locals, provide friendly and accurate information, and promote everything from local attractions and tours to accommodation, transport and events.

You'll proactively take bookings, support sales and merchandising, and keep our centre looking sharp and inviting. Behind the scenes, you'll handle a range of admin and financial tasks including processing payments, daily reconciliations, stock management and updating information across our systems and displays. You'll also support wider tourism and events activity across the organisation.

If you enjoy meaningful community connection and a role where every day is different, you'll feel right at home with us.

Ko wai koe | About you

You're welcoming, adaptable and committed to delivering outstanding customer service. You communicate clearly and professionally, and you take pride in helping people have a great experience in our district.

You're organised and detail‑focused, confident managing financial processes, and comfortable following established procedures. You're curious about local stories and tourism products, and you enjoy building positive relationships with operators and community partners. A sales mindset helps you promote activities and merchandise, while your teamwork and can‑do attitude support a positive, collaborative culture.

Most of all, you care about people, place and community, and you're excited to help others discover the best of Whakatāne.
